A new franchise along with the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightening played their first NHL game the 1992-93 season. The drive for a franchise was spearheaded by hockey legend Phil Esposito.
Their first game the team won against the
Chicago Blackhawks 7-3, with left wing Chris Kontos scoring a record four goals. It was a rocky road thereafter, with the team finally breifly reaching the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1996.
