NHL New York Rangers One of the “Original Six” teams of the NHL, the New York Rangers played their first game at Madsion Square Gardens in 1926. G.L. “Tex” Rickard hired Conn Smythe to build the team, which was dubbed “Tex’s Rangers” after the president of the Gardens. The name stuck, and the Rangers have gone on to win four Stanley Cups. In their first sixteen seasons the team missed the playoffs only once.  They won their most recent Cup in 1994, with the legendary Mark Messier scoring the winning goal.
