NHL New York Islanders The New York Islanders franchise was created on June 7, 1972. It was the beginning of a classic rivalry between the upstart Islanders and the legendary New York Rangers. It took only two seasons for the team to garner a playoff position, with a serious attempt soon to follow in 1979. While they lost that year to the reviled Rangers, the team went on to win four straight Stanley Cups. One of their more legendary games was in 1987, when the team played seven periods of hockey against the Washington Capitals – that’s four overtime periods!
